2026 Artist-in-Residence

Sculptor, Welder, Educator

Selené Huff is a Canadian visual artist based in Red Deer, Alberta (Treaty 7 territory), whose practice bridges industrial craft and contemporary sculpture. As a Red Seal Journeyperson welder and MFA graduate in Sculpture from the University of Alberta, her work is grounded in technical expertise, material knowledge, and a deep engagement with industrial processes.

Working primarily with salvaged steel, Huff uses blacksmithing, welding, fabrication, and metal casting to transform discarded materials into sculptural forms that reference the human body. Her work reimagines industrial objects by reintegrating biomorphic, human-like elements into materials shaped by labor and use, inviting viewers to reconsider relationships between body, object, and environment.

In addition to her studio practice, Huff is an educator and technician at Red Deer Polytechnic and has taught sculpture at the University of Alberta. Her teaching is an integral part of her artistic approach, emphasizing shared knowledge, transparency, and hands-on learning.

Community engagement is central to her work. Through demonstrations, workshops, and open studio practices, Huff creates opportunities for the public to interact with industrial materials and processes that are often inaccessible. Her residency with Transforming Trash will include a public blacksmithing workshop, expanding access to metalworking practices and fostering connections between creative reuse, sustainability, and community learning.

Jori is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in film, costuming and live performance; specifically in circus arts, theatre and stand up comedy. They currently work mostly in the 3 Dimensional medium, focusing on mask work, and mixed media soft sculptures. These sculptural pieces have been included in various juried, solo, duo and group shows, in Canada, the US and Japan, winning 5 awards in the last two years. Jori has also had a piece on permanent display, in Niagara Falls, at the Ripley's Believe it or Not! Museum, since 2014.

The Artist works with entirely secondhand, donated and found objects. Finding materials that have more life in them, and keeping them out of landfills.

The works explore mythology, the representations of gender, body and self, and how we are connected and disconnected from the natural world. There is an additional focus on the creation of “worship objects,” our relationship to these objects, and what "realness" means.

The artist hails from a gulf island in the Salish Sea, (in Canada,) but now lives in the foothills of Northern California, drawing inspiration from and being an active member of both communities.
